Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has instructed the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to fast track development of several areas in the Western Province including Avissawella, Hanwella and Padukka towns, a statement released by the Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness State Ministry said yesterday. The projects were discussed at a progress evaluation meeting conducted at the Housing Ministry in Battaramulla. During the meeting all projects currently under the UDA were also discussed in detail. During the discussion it was decided to group the UDA projects under stalled, working but delayed, yet to be implemented and yet to be planned, to support quick roll out.
“As part of efforts to fast track development projects in the Western Province, several projects that have already started in Hanwella, Avissawella, Padukka, Thunmodara, and Angampitiya will receive special focus. Padukka town has special importance due to it being expected to be connected to a highway. The development should take place with environmental protections as well,” the statement said.
Development of the Meegoda and Kosgama towns will also be explored by the Government in the coming months. Over the next two years a total of seven development projects will be carried out in these areas and they will be targeted at improving the livability of these areas and increasing access for residents, the State Ministry said.
