The Labor Department has decided to increase the salary of estate workers to Rs. 1,000 and the relevant resolution was passed by a majority vote of the Wages Board which met yesterday, said the Commissioner General of Labor, Prabhath Chandrakeerthi.
Eleven votes were cast in favor of the motion while eight votes were cast against it.
Accordingly, a daily wage of Rs. 900 and an allowance of Rs. 100 was approved for estate workers at the Wages Board meeting held at the Labor Department today.
It is noteworthy that the state plantation companies along with the plantation trade unions voted to approve the proposed raise in the daily wages.
Following the decision, Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) General Secretary and State Minister of Estate Housing and Community Infrastructure Jeevan Thondaman, Deputy Chairman Senthil Thondaman and Treasurer Maruthapandi Rameshwaran, called on the Prime Minister at his official residence in Wijerama and thanked the government for taking steps to increase the wages of plantation workers.
