Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL), a member driven organisation owned and driven by the private sector of Sri Lanka, was established to promote strong engagement of the corporate sector in biodiversity and environmental conservation efforts.

Recognising that resource efficiency is a crucial element of a growing and sustainable economy, BSL launched a Resource Efficiency Pledge for the uptake by its membership, to ensure that waste generated through their operations are minimised. The key commitments of the pledge include reducing energy consumption, water usage, raw materials and Greenhouse Gas emissions, efforts towards upcycling and recycling of plastic waste, collaborating to reuse materials and compost, minimising unsustainable packaging requirements, reducing the use of and irresponsible disposal of hazardous materials, establishing a management plan to implement life cycle management for products, and support the supply chain to be resource efficient, establishing a resource monitoring system using SMART targets, and benchmarking resource efficiency against best practices.

BSL invites all its members as well as other private sector entities to commit to the objectives of this pledge and start implementing its requirements within businesses. The full pledge along with guidelines for implementation can now be viewed at http://biodiversitysrilanka.org/pledge/, or can be obtained by connecting with the BSL Secretariat on 0115588833 or via [email protected].

Biodiversity Sri Lanka: Initiated by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Dilmah Conservation and IUCN (the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) in August 2012, BSL now operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee registered under the Companies Act No. 07 of 2007. BSL is a national platform entirely owned and driven by the private sector, established to promote strong engagement of the corporate sector in biodiversity and environmental conservation.
