The Advocata Institute will hold a policy discussion on the proposed Budget for 2021 titled “‘21 Budget is out! What Now?’ Budget Challenges: Consolidation and Sustainability” on Friday, 20 November at 6.30 p.m. on Zoom and on the Advocata Facebook page.
What does the budget for 2021 indicate in terms of policy to deal with the major challenges facing Sri Lanka? The immediate challenges are the pandemic and the foreign debt, but the long-term issue is how is growth to be sustained in the context of a weakened global economy? The budget is regarded as a policy document, but does it give any indication of how long-term challenges will be met?
The online discussion will provide expert analysis on challenges relating to consolidation and sustainability issues surrounding the proposed Budget for 2021. The discussion will feature an eminent panel consisting of Advocata Institute Academic Program Chairperson Dr. Sarath Rajapatirana, University of Colombo Department of Economics – Professor in Economics Professor K. Amirthalingam and former Advisor to Minister of Finance Daniel Alphonsus. The panel would be moderated by Advocata Institute Research Manager Aneetha Warusavitarana.
The Advocata Institute remains committed to finding public policy solutions to key challenges holding back Sri Lanka’s road to development. Sri Lanka’s economic landscape remains precarious, with a significant debt burden and deteriorating economic growth. The panel will discuss in detail the various measures implemented by the budget to tackle these key issues.
The Advocata Institute invites members of the public to tune into the discussion through Zoom. The event will also be live-streamed on Advocata’s Facebook page. You can register at advocata.org/events for event details.
