Access Engineering PLC (AEL), Sri Lanka’s foremost civil engineering and construction enterprise, began construction as the sub-contractor for a new flyover in Kohuwala recently.
Kohuwala junction is currently saturated, creating continuous traffic congestion along its connecting roads and accidents do happen frequently in the area due to heavily congested situation. Kohuwala intersection is one of the most congested road junctions in the Colombo suburban area.
Recognising the criticality of the situation at Kohuwala Junction, the above flyover project was initiated by the Road Development Authority under the direction of Ministry of Highways.
The project is funded by the Government of Hungary and the design and supply of the superstructure are entrusted to Betonútépítő Group of Hungary who plays the role of the main contractor and the design and construction of substructure, on-site fabrication, the designing and construction of adjacent roads and installation and erection of the steel superstructure are subcontracted to Access Engineering PLC.
The 297-metre-long flyover consists of a two-lane carriageway, following the horizontal alignment of the existing Colombo-Horana (B84) Road and a vertical Alignment with a minimum 5.2m vertical clearance for traffic flow underneath the flyover. The structure will be facilitated with a service lane each on either side of the flyover
The official launch of the project on 7 June saw the opening of a plaque and the event was attended online via Zoom technology by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa from Temple Trees.
