Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has introduced new regulations banning the export or re-export of disposal surgical face masks and other kinds of face masks from Sri Lanka.
The Regulations, cited as the Medical Devices (Availability within Sri Lanka) Regulations, came into effect as the country faces a shortage of masks due to the growing demand with the spread of the new coronavirus which had infected 72 persons by Friday.
The Minister also yesterday rescinded a Gazette notification issued on the Pricing of Medical Devices Regulations on 16 March which had fixed the maximum retail price of disposable surgical face masks at Rs. 50 and face masks (surgical/healthcare/respiratory/medical) at Rs. 325.
