The College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (SLCOG) have issued a general advisory for pregnant mothers to follow, in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic and strongly advise them to follow the precautions and advice by the Ministry of Health, to avoid exposure to the corona virus.

SLCOG said that it is concerned about the impact of the current situation and the impact of COVID-19 on pregnant women, and stated that it is working closely with the Health Ministry to maintain care for such women in the antenatal clinics and the maternity wards- with the objective of providing the best possible care and safe childbirths.

The SLCOG advises pregnant mothers to avoid social gatherings, travelling, maintain social distancing of at least six feet at all times, to wear face masks when attending the hospital and to follow other general advice- such as washing hands and avoiding touching one’s face, nose and mouth.

Pregnant mothers have also been advised to take precautions when using common toilets and handling door knobs, to keep the antenatal and other medical records separately without contaminating them with other items, avoid public transport at all times, and if taking taxis; take all precautions and make sure the driver does not have a cough or fever, before getting in.

The women have also been advised to inform hospital staff that if they have fever, cold, cough or sore throat and reveal any exposure to an infected person or a person who returned from overseas within the last month. “You will be isolated and further testing will be carried out if you are suspected to be having the COVID-19 infection. You will be provided with the best possible care for the safety of yourself and your baby without discrimination,” the SLCOG stated, addressing pregnant mothers.
