Police officers manning a roadblock, opened fire at a car which was violating curfew regulations in Egodauyana, Modara last night- injuring three occupants. According to the Police Media Unit, the car had been traveling towards Panadura from Egodauyana at 10.20 pm, when first signalled to stop by policemen at the at a roadblock in Egodaduyana. The vehicle had sped off ignoring warnings to halt, prompting officers at the roadblock to alert officers at a roadblock near the new Modara bridge to respond.
The car had failed to stop when requested by Police manning the roadblocks on each end of the bridge, prompting a police officer to open fire at the vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned near the Panadura Hospital. Three of the four occupants had been injured in the shooting and had been admitted to the hospital.
Police have arrested the driver and the injured occupants who are undergoing treatment at the hospital. One injured person has been transferred to the Colombo General Hospital for treatment. The Egodauyana Police station is currently underway with conducting further investigations.
The Police have also arrested 1264 persons who were violating curfew regulations and detained 325 vehicles used by them in a 24 hours period ending at 6 am this morning. The arrests bring the total number of curfew violators who were taken into custody from the 20 March to 10,730. A total of 2657 vehicles have also been detained during that period.
