The Police Department today announced that all persons (including essential services) must wear a mask covering their mouth and nose when travelling.

The decision has been taken after a number of Policemen, members of the armed forces, Public Health Inspectors and medical staff were ordered into quarantine as a precautionary measure due to possible exposure from COVID-19 patients.

"You are all aware that the Police, members of the armed forces and emergency services are manning check points on the road and meet you all regularly. Please be responsible and do your part to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, wear a mask when you come on to the roads," Police Spokesman SP Jaliya Senarathne said releasing an audio message.

According to the Police, the mask can be one made at home or even a handkerchief or cloth worn to cover the mouth and nose.

The Inspector General of Police has also decided to award Rs. 5,000 to each person in service from the rank of Chief Inspector and below. The payment will be made from the Police Awards Fund, the Police Media Unit said in a press release.
