The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today suspended the party membership of its Thanamalwila Pradeshiya Sabha member R.A. Ranaweera, who was arrested along with four others on Thursday for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.
SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam said a disciplinary inquiry would follow after which he would be expelled from the party.
“The SLPP is committed to discipline and we expect a high level of discipline from all our members,” Kariyawasam said in a news release.
He added that even on previous occasions several SLPP members against whom there were complaints had been interdicted and subjected to disciplinary action.
Ranaweera was remanded till 16 April along with the four other men by the Embilipitiya Magistrate.
