PM lodges complaint with CID against fake news

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s lawyers today lodged a complaint at the Colombo Crimes Division (CID) regarding false information circulating on social media about the Government’s efforts to provide essential food to people under curfew.

The Prime Minister's Media Division in a statement said legal action would be taken against those spreading false information on social media about the Government’s effort to supply essential consumer goods during curfew. “It appears that the Prime Minister’s decisions, including the decision to provide essential food items and concessions to the public, are deliberately falsified to gain political advantage,” it said.

The Government also requested the public to support the Government's efforts to contain COVID-19 and only circulate verified information.
