The Public Health Inspectors’ (PHI) Union of Sri Lanka has given the Government until 4 April to ensure the safety of PHIs during the COVID-19 epidemic and has said they will suspend services if these demands are not met.
In a letter sent on 1 April addressed to the Secretary of the Health and Indigenous Medical Services Ministry, the Union President M.G.U. Rohana stated that they were disappointed by the lack of concern from health authorities for the safety of PHIs.
According to them, the Government has failed to provide minimum safety measures or facilities for PHIs, transport for official duties, and food and other basic facilities. In addition to this, Rohana stated that lack of essential legal provisions put the PHIs at risk.
