Minister for Power and Energy Mahinda Samaraweera has announced a grace period for settling of electricity bills until 31 March .
He has also instructed officials of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) not to disconnect the power supply of any households or institutions that fail to settle bills on time this month, due to the prevailing situation in the country. Officials told the Daily FT that the Minister informed CEB officials and trade unionists that he met with that people should not be inconvenienced with regards to power supply until things return to normal.
He said the electricity sector is an essential service, and the Police and the armed forces have been asked to facilitate their movement in case of urgent repairs caused by breakdowns.
