The Election Commission today officially notified the indefinite postponement of the Parliamentary Election. The poll was originally scheduled for 25 April but was postponed due to the COVID -19 outbreak in the country. In an Extraordinary Gazette Notification issued by the Chairman of the EC Mahinda Deshapriya and its two other Commissioners, the EC said it would appoint a day falling 14 days after 30 April 2020 as the new day for the election and that the new date would be made public via a Gazette Notification in due course.
The EC used the powers vested in it under Section 24(3) of the Parliament Elections Act, No. 01 of 1981 to postpone the election.
The other members of the EC are N.L. Abeyekekere and S. Ratnajeevan J. Hoole.
