Ninety-five people were sent to quarantine today by the Navy and health officials and Police have warned that anyone crossing district lines in violation of curfew will also be sent to quarantine centres in the future.
Navy personnel conducting an intelligence operation arrested 28 people who had ignored instructions to be under self-quarantine in Sudewella, Ja-Ela. They were arrested over failure to follow quarantine regulations. Those under quarantine were linked to a taxi-driver who had tested positive for COVID-19 from the area.
The people evading quarantine were tracked down by Navy Intelligence.
They will be transferred to the Navy quarantine centre in Oluvil, the Navy said in a statement.
In addition, at least 67 people from the Ratnapura and Pelmadulla areas have been sent to the Diyatalawa Quarantine Centre. These included about six families related to a gem businessman who had tested positive for COVID-19 from the area.
DIG Ajith Rohana releasing a statement today warned that any people caught crossing district lines in violation of curfew would also be placed under quarantine. His warning comes as the number of curfew violators climbed to over 19,000 today.
