A fifth person has died from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) today, a 44-year-old returnee from Italy.
National Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said the deceased was a resident of Homagama and was sent to a quarantine centre upon arrival in Sri Lanka.
He was later admitted to the Welikanda Hospital on 23 March and transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on 26 March.
Dr. Jasinghe said the deceased had no other illnesses.
As of yesterday, eight new COVID-19 cases brought the total to 159.
Nearly 290 persons who completed the mandatory 14 days in quarantine at a number of centres were released on Friday after completing a medical check-up. A total of 1,741 persons are still in 40 quarantine centres run by the military.
