Safety guidelines for the elderly were issued by the National Secretariat for Elders as they are a high risk group for COVID-19 and Sri Lanka’s ageing population is close to 300,000.
According to the advice of the Sri Lanka Association of Geriatric Medicine (SLAGM), the elderly are advised to maintain a safe distance from people and a three-foot distance is recommended when talking to people.
The elderly are to remain indoors instead of going to hospital clinics. The SLAGM recommends having someone else fill prescriptions at nearby pharmacies on their behalf. If it is absolutely necessary for an elderly person to leave the house, they are to wear face masks.
The elderly are also to avoid hugging and kissing family members, especially grandchildren, and not entertain visitors or gather in large crowds during this time. They are also asked to avoid drinking cold beverages and regularly consume hot water.
The elderly should regularly wash their hands using soap, especially after handling money or going outside. When coughing and sneezing, these high-risk groups are to cover their noses and mouths with their elbow.
While these safety measures are recommended to ensure the safety of the elderly, the SLAGM also asks that they remain calm, sleep well, and maintain a nutritious diet.
