Accordingly, those interested in donating blood can contact 0115332153 or 0115332154 to register for an appointment, NBTS Director Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe told Daily FT.
Dr. Edirisinghe assured that there were adequate stocks of blood and would be distributed to necessary hospitals. He pointed out that even though blood donation camps were halted due to the spreading of COVID-19 there were sufficient buffer stocks maintained.
“We have adequate stocks of blood. Therefore there is no need to be worried. However, those who wish to donate blood can get a special appointment. Once they are registered they will be informed where the nearest hospital they can donate blood to is,” he said.
He acknowledged due to spreading of COVID-19 blood donations were reduced but the demand for blood was also reduced due to cancellation pre-planned operations.
“More than 80% of the blood collected from donation camps, therefore that was completely stopped but we have donors who already registered to donate blood if needed,” he added. Previously, members of armed forces donated blood due to the reduction of blood donations.
