Strong winds in the Puttalam District last evening resulted in damage to 635 houses in Karuwalagaswewa, Nawagaththegama, Puttalam, Wanathawilluwa and Mahakumbukkadawala.
Of these, the roofs of 37 houses have been damaged completely, the Government Information Department said in a statement today.
Those affected by the strong winds have sought refuge at public places and relatives’ houses and measures have been taken to provide affected families with tarpaulin, relief packages, and compensation.
In addition to the damage to houses, the roof of a paddy storage was also damaged and a portion of the paddy has been exposed to the rain. While the exposed paddy was separated from the rest in storage last night, the exact amount of damage is to be assessed later today.
The strong winds also caused damage to electricity lines as a result of which 7,000 houses in the district will have their power supply interrupted. However, power is expected to be reconnected by evening.
