Vellai Oya Estate establishes an all time Colombo tea auction record price

At the tea auctions concluded this week, two invoices of Vellai Oya BOPF achieved an all time Colombo tea auction record price of Rs. 560 per kg for the Western Medium category. The teas were hotly competed for in view of the useful quality of the liquors and the ultimate buyer for both invoices was Unilever Lipton Ltd., a leading buyer of liquoring teas. The teas were sold through the ex-estate catalogue of Lanka Commodity Brokers Ltd. Vellai Oya estate is managed by Watawala Plantations PLC and is one of the better established western marks having a reputation for teas with good colour and strength and useful brightness. This factory has seen a complete modernisation of the machinery, following which the end product has seen a further improvement in quality. Vellai Oya teas are regularly supported by buyers for the UK, South Africa, Russia, Japan and Hong Kong.
