Sri Lanka participated in the 18th International Exhibition “Prodexpo 2011”, the largest international food and beverage exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe
The exhibition was held in Moscow from 7-11 February 2011. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow assisted the participation of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, Ceylon Tea Land (pvt) Ltd and Sri Lanka Tea Bags (pvt) Ltd. at this exhibition.
Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga opened the Sri Lanka stand by lightning the traditional oil lamp on 7 February 2011.
At the opening ceremony, Ambassador Weeratunga mentioned that as this is the largest Food & Beverages exhibition in Russia, Sri Lanka’s participation would help retain the market and promote Ceylon tea in the Russian tea market since Russia is the single largest buyer of Ceylon tea.
Major Sri Lankan tea exporters such as Imperial Tea Export Ltd, Jafferjee Brothers, Empire Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Riston Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Regency Teas (Pvt) Ltd, Dilmah Teas, HVA Foods Ltd, Tea Tang (Pvt) Ltd, St. Clairs, Basilur Tea and Ceylon Fresh Tea Company also participated in the Prodexpo- 2011. On 9 February, Ambassador Weeratunga and his wife hosted a dinner for the participants from Sri Lanka, and other guests.
During the dinner, Ambassador Weeratunga explained the current situation of the tea industry in Sri Lanka to more than 100 guests who were present.
Hasitha De Alwis, Director of the Sri Lanka Tea Promotion Bureau and Manuja Peiris, Chief Executive, International Tea Committee Ltd. also addressed the audience.
