President Mahinda Rajapaksa said that attention should be focused on the aspiration of youths and modern technology when drawing economic plans. He has emphasised the need to develop the country agriculturally.
The President has pointed out that due to the Government’s proper agricultural policies the country has become self-sufficient in rice and other food crops.
The President made these comments participating as the Chief Guest in the function held to release the 2011Annual Report of Ministry of Finance and Planning at the Ministry last week.
Commenting on the frequent trade union actions in the country, the President said that as a former trade union leader he is happy to meet demands of the trade unions but the workers also should realise that there are some limitations in granting concessions to the working class. He said that foreign investors are keen on investing in Sri Lanka due to prevailing peace and stability and the government is pursuing avenues to bring in foreign direct investment to the country in many sectors.
Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Geethanjana Gunawardena presented the annual report to the President, who is also the Minister of Finance & Planning. Senior Minister for International Monetary Cooperation Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Secretary to the Finance Ministry, Dr. P.B Jayasundara were also present at this occasion.
