India’s tea exports down 4% in June

New Delhi: Tea exports declined by four per cent to 12.27 million kg in June this year due to a fall in exports of the brew from South India.

The country had shipped 12.76 million kg of tea in the corresponding year ago period, Tea Board data said.

Tea shipments from North India registered a growth of almost 14 per cent to 5.62 million kg during the period under review from 4.95 million kg in the same period last year.

However, tea exports from South India declined by 15 per cent to 6.64 million kg in June, 2011, from 7.81 million kg in the same period of the previous year.

Shipments of the brew fell by five per cent in the April—June, 2011, period to 34.92 million kg from 36.72 million kg in the same period of the previous year.

In the first six months of the current calender year, exports of tea declined by 18 per cent to 74.55 million kg from 90.71 million kg in the January-June, 2010, period.
