World Food Program celebrates 50 years of partnership in Sri Lanka

The UN World Food Program’s 50 years of partnership in Sri Lanka was commemorated by the Government with the release of a commemorative stamp. The event was graced by dignitaries from the Government, the UN, and other development organisations.

Notable speeches were given by Ministry of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs Secretary V. Sivagnanasothy; UN Resident Coordinator Hanaa Singer; World Food Program Country Representative/Country Director Brenda Barton; Department of External Resources Director General R.M.P Rathnayake; UN Division of Foreign Ministry Director General; and WFP Cooperation Additional Secretary and Partnership Director K. Mahesan.

As Sri Lanka has progressed from a low-income to upper-middle income country, its relationship between WFP has also transitioned to livelihood support, capacity building, and a focus on nutrition and resilience. This half-century milestone celebrated that progress.
