The dairy industry in Sri Lanka is one of potential, but also one rife with many challenges, requiring skill and adequate support on the path to success. With the rise of the ‘agriprenuer’ and a constant evolution in agricultural practices and technology, dairy farming is seen as an attractive proposition, for those interested in uplifting their livelihoods – due to the constant support from players in the industry, and the positive impact it has on public health and wellbeing.
A.B. Nawarathna, a farmer is one example of a success story in the local dairy industry, helped by Fonterra. Nawarathna has spent the last eight years working in the dairy farming industry, He states that, in retrospect, becoming a dairy farmer was the best possible decision – having achieved a stable career, and secured his future. At 26 years old, he owns three cows and has secured a good income and is delighted with the progress that Fonterra has helped him to achieve.
The economic uncertainty brought about by COVID-19 has caused a lot of worry about income, as it has been difficult for farmers to run their businesses throughout the many lockdowns. Nawarathna highlighted one of the usual difficulties they have faced – and something they feared would worsen during the pandemic – the delaying of payments. This usually has a direct impact their day-to-day lives as most are dependent on daily income and delayed payments can cause severe problems.
Nawarathna proudly noted that Fonterra’s constant support throughout, by ensuring timely payments, has enabled their businesses to continue throughout the constant lockdowns and economic uncertainty, giving them a sense of security. He also discussed how Fonterra has given farmers the tools and technical knowledge to develop high quality milk, something that not only benefits them, but has a significantly positive impact on the health and wellbeing of society as a whole.
Providing his thoughts on his journey so far, Nawarathna stated, “My success thus far can be attributed to my hard work and dedication, coupled with the immense support provided by Fonterra. In this industry, it’s very important to create your own path – to own your business at young age is truly a blessing. Working with Fonterra has helped me reach success, but has also helped me give back to society, and even take care of my personal needs too. I look forward to continuing this partnership for the years to come, and further develop my business so I can contribute even more to the wellbeing of society.”
“Although there has been uncertainty amongst the younger generation in joining this industry, they need to realise that dairy farming is a lucrative field. I would highly encourage the youth to earn a living through dairy farming, based on my own experience with Fonterra.”
