Shawlands Estate, Lunugala, achieved an all-time record price of Rs. 1,500 per kg for a liquoring OP1 grade surpassing its previous record of Rs. 1,250 in 2017, in the Uva Medium category at the weekly tea auctions held on 27 August.
The tea estate lies on the southern slopes of Madulsima hill range at an elevation of 990 metres above sea level. Shawlands tea factory was constructed in the late 1930s and has undergone several renovations to meet international standards, and is Rainforest Alliance, Ethical Tea Partnership, ISO 22000:2005/9001:2015 certified for the Manufacture of Black Tea and CQC certified. The estate has also been awarded a two-star rating by the Sri Lanka Tea Board for Excellence in Good Organising Practices and Excellence in Good Manufacturing Practices.
Shawlands Estate is managed by Hapugastenna Plantations PLC, which comes under the purview of Finlays Tea Estates Sri Lanka.
