Jinasena Ltd., one of the leading water management system solutions providers in Sri Lanka, has broken new ground with the implementation of two innovative projects recently. These include designing and installing irrigation systems for Clearpoint Residencies in Rajagiriya and Constance Halaveli luxury hotel in the Maldives.
Overlooking the Diyawanna Lake, Clearpoint Residencies is known as tallest residential vertical garden in the world and consists of 171 luxury apartments spread across 46 floors. Each apartment has planted terraces circling the entire structure, consisting of an inbuilt self-sustaining watering system specially designed by Jinasena. Using a pumping unit installed on the rooftop of the building, water is pumped to all apartments and used to water the trees and plants through a set of drippers. An automated timing device is utilised to set the times of the day for the plants to be watered.
A special rain sensor is also used to detect if any rain has taken place, in which case, the amount of water pumped is reduced thereby leading to a saving in water usage. One of the key aspects of the system is the Pressure Regulating Valve (PRV) installed on every 5th floor of the 46-storey building in order control the significant amount of pressure that builds up as the water travels from top to bottom of the building.
The Constance Halaveli project is the Jinasena’s first foray into the overseas market. The project consisted of designing and installing an irrigation system for the luxury hotel where Jinasena had to utilise the existing irrigation infrastructure to irrigate each of the 29 villas, including a super luxury President’s Villa, and certain common areas of the hotel. The solution utilised a series of tubing, spray jets ad drippers that used desalinated water to carry out the watering during the night hours in order to not disturb the guests staying over at the hotel.
Elaborating on the two projects, Jinasena Ltd. Deputy General Manager (Irrigation Systems) Ajith de Silva stated, “These projects presented some unique challenges which we were successfully able to overcome through our innovative thinking and unmatched expertise in irrigation systems. At Clearpoint, the challenge was that although we’ve done countless number of horizontal gardens, we’ve never done a vertical garden, let alone one of such size and complexity. At Constance Halaveli, we had to utilise the existing infrastructure without having the need to disturb the smooth functioning of the hotel by carrying out new installations. We are proud to have succeeded in both projects and met the given objectives on time, thereby exceeding the client’s expectations.”
Jinasena’s irrigation systems can be innovatively adapted for other uses. For instance, they are an ideal solution for buildings requiring pest control treatment. Using laid out piping, the pest control chemicals can be easily sent to all parts of the building on a periodic basis, as and when required. Another innovative use of these irrigation systems is to wash solar panels. It is common knowledge that dust and dirt drastically reduces the efficiency of solar panels. Using an automated irrigation system, these panels can be cleaned efficiently at regular intervals thereby keeping them in optimum working condition.
Jinasena irrigation systems are available through its network of 19 Service Centres located at Colombo, Bandarawela, Buttala, Girandurukotte, Beruwala, Ekala, Avissawella, Dambulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, Kaduruwela, Tambuttegama, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Trincomalee, Ampara, Embilipitiya and Jaffna. All products come with a warranty and a highly-reliable after sales service and ample spare parts.
Founded in 1905, Jinasena Ltd. was the first Ceylonese-owned engineering company and was rated among the five leading engineering companies in the island by 1932. In 1950, the son of the founder T.S. Jinasena designed and manufactured the first Jinasena Centric Water Pump. It is still the only water pump that is entirely manufactured in Sri Lanka. It continues to enjoy a significant market share in Sri Lanka due to its sturdy construction, proven track record, availability of spare parts and reputed after-sales service. The company also specialises in Water Pumping Solutions, Solar Solutions and Water Purifying Solutions, which makes Jinasena one of the few companies that can provide Water Management Solutions (on or off grid) under one roof. In addition, the company is also involved in Renewable Energy solutions and Agricultural Machinery in keeping with its slogan ‘One trusted name and many possibilities’.
