involvement in the tea industry, won the Gold Award in the value-added tea and associated products category at the Industrial Excellence Awards organised by the Industrial Development Board (IDB).
Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., Chairman Dr. W. Jinadasa, received the award at a gala ceremony held at Waters’ Edge under the patronage of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
Established in 1983 as a tea leaf collection company, the Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., has now grown into a large network of companies that make a significant contribution to the local economy with 11 tea factories in several districts, mini hydro power plants and solar power systems. The business network consists of a group of companies including Andaradeniya Estate Ltd., Sinharaja Hills Plantation Ltd., Nivithigala Factories Ltd., Andaradeniya Holdings Ltd., Hills Plantation Ltd., Andaradeniya Tea Estate Ceylon Ltd., Andaradeniya Mini Hydro Power Ltd.
The Andaradeniya Group, which contributes 2.5% to Sri Lanka›s national tea production and produces 8.5 million kilograms of tea annually, provides about 4,000 direct jobs and about 25,000 indirect jobs and engages with nearly 25,000 tea smallholders. The company has also established a group of rural transport agents and young entrepreneurs. For his business, social and religious activities, since 1983, Dr. Jinadasa has won many awards locally and internationally.
“We give priority to the production of high-quality tea which will upgrade the tea industry, which is a valuable foreign exchange earning resource for the country. I would like to express my gratitude to the fellow board of directors, staff, transport agents and tea smallholders who have contributed to this achievement,” said Dr. Jinadasa.
