GLO-BUS is an online fully-automated business simulation game which helps business students by training them to devise successful business strategies. It was developed in 2008 to help educate students in the field of Business Strategy focusing on competitive strategy in a truly global market arena.

The game is enormously popular amongst undergraduates and MBA students of other international universities as well, and encourages a high level of professional conduct in decision making and strategy planning.

Students in the final year of the Information Systems with Business Management (ISBM) internal degree program from University of Westminster (UOW) are required to use the GLO-BUS simulation game as part of their assessment criteria on the Business Strategy module and compete as a team. One such student team from Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) performed extremely well during the simulation game and were invited to compete in the GLO-BUS Best-Strategy competition thrown open to chosen universities throughout the world.

It is also noteworthy that this is the first time in IIT’s history that a team of IIT students have been invited to compete in the GLO-BUS Best-Strategy competition along with 180 other top performing teams from across the world, and the team have done extremely well to be placed fifth in the world, at the GLO-BUS Best-Strategy competition held in May, which is an outstanding achievement.

The winning team which made it to the grand finals comprised of Lakshika Paiva, Minura Maddage and Kivindra De Silva. The finals consisted of a total of 12 teams, each representing a university. Lakshika and her team competed under company Juxtapose in the camera industry. Competition at the finals was intense, with a total of 180 teams vying for the top spot. The finals were held over a ten day period from 7 May to 18 May. Lakshika and her teammates competed against rival teams by building diverse business strategies to market their product, and improve their business share.

Commenting on the event, Lakshika said that the biggest challenge they faced was how to manage time during the competition, with the final year examinations intervening. This was further aggravated since the contest imposed daily deadlines on contestants, so that they had to divide their time between studying for their exams and planning good corporate strategies for the contest. However, they made good use of the time available to them, and completed the contest on a successful note.

Further, Lakshika said that the experience students gained by making complex business strategy decisions would no doubt be greatly useful for their future careers.

Looking back at the event Lakshika and her team mates are content with their performance, and are happy with the team effort made to compete well despite other commitments. We hope that this victory will encourage yet more students to take up the mantle next year, and do well enough to win even better accolades for IIT.
