SLIIT Computing, in association with Liverpool John Moores University, UK, has launched a three-year route towards a BEng (Honours) degree program in electronic and electrical engineering with registrations for the January 2018 intake now open.

The launch of the new degree program route is a game-changing event in Sri Lanka as SLIIT Computing is the first reputable institution to provide for a mid-level degree program in electronic and electrical engineering.

SLIIT Computing is a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), which is the largest IT degree-awarding institute in Sri Lanka in the field of Information Technology, recognised by the University Grants Commission under the Universities Act.

For over 17 years SLIIT has been offering IT, business and engineering degree programs. The new program will provide students with a well-rounded cutting-edge knowledge base in electronic and electrical engineering, comprehensively covering all essential areas whilst equipping them with all the skills they will require to pursue the profession successfully.

SLIIT and SLIIT Computing have a longstanding relationship and arrangement with Liverpool John Moores University in the UK, which is a highly ranked university with a vibrant community of 25,000 students from 100 countries, offering more than 250 degree programs.

The university was awarded the University of the Year Award in 2017 at the ‘Educate north and UK leadership awards and conference’ and it is one of the largest and most dynamic universities in the UK.

The new degree program will allow students to undertake projects that will give them the freedom to design their own solutions to problems. Students will also be supported through seminars on commercial project development, which will cultivate the key skills required to plan and manage projects.

Discussing the newly available degree program, Prof. Lalith Gamage, Vice Chancellor/CEO of SLIIT and Managing Director/CEO of SLIIT Computing, said: “We identified that there was a huge vacuum for qualified electronic and electrical engineers in Sri Lanka. However, there are only a few opportunities for those who want to pursue that career path. This is what inspired us to provide a BEng program in electronic and electrical engineering. Successful completion of the program will enable students to graduate with a degree qualification. We look forward to our first intake for the program, commencing January 2018.”

As qualified electronic and electrical engineers, graduates will have a world of opportunities opened up to them and be able to work on a variety of projects that involve computers, robots, cell phones, cars, radar and  navigation systems, wiring and lighting systems, the automation industry and a host of other electrical systems.

Power Systems Engineering, Product Development Engineering, Project Engineering and Process Engineering are some of the more popular career paths that will be open to graduates. Applicants will require three passes at the Local/London GCE Advanced Level Examination (Maths/Technology stream) to be eligible for acceptance into the SLIITC HND program, and will then be eligible for progression to the final year for BEng (Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

Students awaiting their examination results are also eligible to apply for provisional registration. Further, professionals who already possess a Higher National Diploma or equivalent qualification pertaining to a relevant field can enter the final year of the electronic and electrical engineering degree program subject to acceptance by LJMU.

Participants can apply now to begin their journey towards the dream of becoming a fully-qualified electronic and electrical engineer.
