Minerals Gem & Jewellery bagged a coveted Gold award at the Tourism Excellence award ceremony organised by Western Province Tourist Board recently.

This prestigious tourism award ceremony was held at The Kingsbury, Colombo and the Chief Guest was Chief Minister of the Western Province Isura Dewapriya.

Minerals Gem & Jewellery is a major tourist attraction within the Galle Fort which is a proud national heritage of southern Sri Lanka. The gem and jewellery exporting company can be introduced as a successful partnership of two gem industry generations.

Mohomed Mukthar Muhammed Izzeth is the Founder of Minerals Gem & Jewellery. His family entered the gem and jewellery trade way back as early 19th century and expanded to Vietnam in the 1940s.  After the demise of his father, Izzeth expanded the business to Paris. Later on he moved back to his ancestral business centre, Galle Fort, and founded Minerals Gem & Jewellery with a kick start as Mohomad Naiyn Fazal Ahmed joined as a partner. Fazal also hails from a gem and jewellery family. Both his parents are linked to the jewellery and lapidary trade. Elaborating on their trade Fazal said: “In Sri Lanka most of the jewellery with stones are made of 14 or 16 karat gold but we are using only 18 karat soft gold and even 18+ since we are exporting to UK. Moreover we use palladium instead of yellowy for making white gold jewellery.”

Mineral Gem & Jewellery is currently exporting their products to high end markets such as London, Paris and Swiss.

Fazal, who is an IT graduate turned out to his family trade, commented on the receipt of the Tourism Excellence award: “It is actually encouraging g to have received such a prestigious award. It adds more light to our jewellery and satisfaction to our hard work.”

In addition to Minerals Gem & Jewellery, they run Place Vendome, Leyn Baan Villa and Cafe Hula Hula in Galle Fort.

Located in No. 74, Leynbann Street, Fort, Galle Minerals Gem & Jewellery is moving forward as a tourist attraction not only because Sri Lankan gems are the best souvenirs for visitors to take home but because of the craftsmanship they exhibit in making fine exclusive and unique designs.
