Malaysia starts charging departure levy on all flights leaving the country

The Malaysian government has started charging a departure levy on flights departing Malaysia, effective 1 September 2019.

For destinations within ASEAN, the departure levy is RM 8 for economy class and RM 50 for business class and business suites.

For those travelling beyond ASEAN, the departure levy is RM 20 for economy class and RM 150 for business class and business suites. The departure levy will be collected by all airlines on behalf of the government, and shall be itemised and reflected in the total airfare.

Passengers aged below 24 months, international transit passengers with a stopover time of less than 12 hours, crew on duty and travellers who book flights before the effective date are exempted from the departure levy.
