Classic Travel completes its first wildlife expedition to Kaziranga, ‘The Land of Giants’

Sri Lanka’s leading travel solutions provider Classic Travel recently became the first travel agent in the country to organise an expedition to the picturesque Kaziranga National Park. 

Located in India’s northeastern state of Assam, Kaziranga is home to more than 100 Bengal tigers, 2,500 Indian one-horned rhinos — two-thirds of the world’s entire population — and the last surviving population of eastern swamp deer which can grow up to six feet tall in height.

The tigers hide in the rippling grass and there’s an excellent chance of seeing rhinos, wild elephants and buffalos on a four-wheel-drive safari. The park is also famous for the sightings of Hoolock Gibbon, India’s only species of ape. Storks, kingfishers, fish eagles, kestrels, hornbills, parakeets, ducks, and geese can be spotted easily among the flat grasslands and near the lakes.

In 1985, Kaziranga was declared as a ‘World Heritage Site’ by UNESCO for its unique natural environment. It is widely known for having helped conserve the Rhinoceros Unicoris, or greater one-horned rhinoceros, after the animal had reached the brink of extinction at the turn of the 20th century. With their prominent pure keratin horn and seemingly armour-plated bodies, the fabled rhinos used to be compared to the mythical unicorn.

Acclaimed Sri Lankan wildlife photographer Rajiv Welikala led the group of travellers to savour and capture truly mesmerizing moments like venturing into the mighty Brahmaputra River by boat to witness something truly rare, the critically endangered Ganges river dolphin.

The hospitality, food, and wildlife encounters were something I would recommend to anyone. We counted over 130 bird species, but the Rhinos were clearly the main attraction. These majestic animals were once almost extinct and brought back from the brink. They now thrive in Kaziranga,” noted Rajiv.
