  • Commits to donate 100,000 medicinal plants and 5 million medicinal plant seeds for reforestation and biodiversity conservation efforts

Nature’s Beauty Creations Ltd. (NBC), has committed to donate over 100,000 medicinal plants and five million medicinal plant seeds for environment protection efforts islandwide by 2025, as part of their ‘Sirilaka Osu Uyanak Karamu’ project.

As part of its ambitious project, NBC recently donated 2,000 medicinal plants, including those that are endemic and vulnerable, to the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Sadhaharitha Hetak’ campaign. More than 30,000 plants will continue to be donated within 2021 for environment initiatives of the Ministry of Environment, as well as for reforestation efforts in the Nilgala Forest Reserve in Monaragala, to selected schools, and islandwide reforestation and environment protection efforts by the Army, Police, Agriculture Department and Forestry Department.

A unique feature of the initiative is that the medicinal plants for distribution are all grown within the company’s own medicinal plant garden by the company’s Agriculture department. The garden contains over 60% of Sri Lanka’s medicinal plant varieties, and is currently Sri Lanka’s largest privately owned collection of medicinal plants for conservation.

“Protecting nature and its biodiversity has always been of utmost importance to our company. Our tiny island is one of the world’s 36 biodiversity hotspots, meaning it is one of Earth’s most biologically diverse yet threatened terrestrial areas. Therefore, we feel we must do our very best to conserve this remarkable biodiversity of our island,” commented Nature’s Beauty Creations Ltd. Managing Director Samantha Kumarasinghe.

“This particular medicinal plant distribution initiative which we began in 2020 is part of the company’s efforts towards large-scale biodiversity conservation, reforestation, land restoration and increase in carbon sequestration. We are proud to be growing these plants in our medicinal plant garden that surrounds our factory. By growing the plants ourselves we can strategically release plants for distribution based on plant height and optimal growing seasons,” he further added.

Nature’s Beauty Creations is the winner of Sri Lanka’s highest environmental award ‘National Green Award-Gold,’ and manufacturer of brands Nature’s Secrets, Panda Baby, Champion and Misumi.

Since its inception, NBC has been a pioneer in implementing environment protection initiatives across biodiversity conservation, waste management and sustainability awareness. NBC has also been a zero water waste facility for more than 12 years, generates renewable biogas within its facilities, carries out plastic waste recycling projects, has set up a subsidiary company to manufacture patented, organic-certified biological fertilisers to reduce Sri Lanka’s chemical fertiliser usage, and implemented many other eco-friendly initiatives. The company’s vision is ‘to be the most environment-friendly cosmetics manufacturer in the world’.
