National Savings Bank commemorates World Earth Day

The premier savings bank in the country, National Savings Bank (NSB), as a responsible government institution and corporate citizen, joined hands to commemorate World Earth Day, on 22 April, in the next stage of the agroforest program launched by NSB to promote planting agrarian crops in urban spaces, distribution of vegetable and fruit saplings for the dwellers at Elvitigala Flats, Colombo.

The event took place with the participation of Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, NSB Chairperson Keasila Jayawardena, Colombo Municipal Council Municipal Commissioner Roshani Dissanayake and NSB General Manager/CEO.  

Further, the Bank has took part in the planting program launched by the Colombo Municipal Council to establish a fruit orchard at Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo as per the concept of Municipal Commissioner Roshani Dissanayake. The objective of this program is to attract bird species by planting trees which are common in rural areas such as Palu and Weera, in urban areas and thereby encourage the children living in urban areas to be more familiar, sensitive and connected with nature.

Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, NSB Chairperson Keasila Jayawardena, Mayor of Colombo Rosy Senanayake, Ministry of Environment Secretary Anil Jasinghe, NSB General Manager/CEO Ajith Peiris, NSB DGM K. Raveendran, Colombo Municipal Council Municipal Commissioner Lal Karunathilake, Roshani Dissanayake, French and Japan Ambassadors to Sri Lanka, United Nations Secretary General’s Envoy on Youth at United Nations, Jayathma Wickremanayake, Senior Management of NSB and many other distinguished guests were present at the occasion.
