Wennappuwa girls stamp their class

Junior Girls Hockey championship 2019

Wennappuwa Girls beat Kandy District Hockey Association 2/1 at the finals of the inaugural Girls’ Under-21 Junior Hockey Championship which was worked off at the Astro Turf in Colombo.

At the short breather winners led 2/0.

Wennappuwa Girls scored their goals through Kavindya Peiris and Devudu Samudra. In the second half the Girls from the Up Country put up a brave effort not only by scoring one goal but also kept their defence tight not allowing their opponents to score. Kandy Girls only goal was scored by Charuka Abeyrathne.

In the two semi-final encounter’s Western province Hockey Association beat Colombo Hockey Association 3/2 and in the other encounter Kandy Hockey Association beat Sri Lanka “Golds” 3/1.

Ten teams battled it out in this tournament which was organised for the very first time by the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation. (SJ)
