First Sabuddhi Sports Literary Awards next month

The first and only Sports Literary Awards in Sri Lanka, the Sabuddhi Sports Literary Awards, will be held on 11 December at the Duncan White Auditorium of the Ministry of Sports under the patronage of Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Namal Rajapaksa at 4 p.m.

The main objective of the Sabuddhi Sports Literature Awards is to recognise the mass media, new media, sports institutions and organisations, including writers, who have contributed to the promotion of sports literature for the betterment of sports.

There are 30 awards and certificates of merit expected to be awarded in 10 categories targeting the year 2019:

01. Sports Literature New Medium of the Year

02.Sports Literature Maga-zine of the Year

03. Sports Literature Promotion of the Year – Publishing House

04. Sports Literature Television of the Year

05. Sports Literature Radio of the Year

06. Sports Literature Daily Newspaper of the Year

07. Sports Literature Weekend Newspaper of the Year

08. Sports Literary of the Year

09. Various Subject Sports Book of the Year

10. Classical Sports Book of the Year

The winners will be selected by the Sabuddhi Sports Literary Awards Intelligence Board chaired by Harsha B. Abeykoon and comprises Prof. Pratibha Mahanamahewa, Attorney-at-Law and Prof. Asanga Wijeyeratne, Senior Advisors to the Advisory Board and Prof. Fatima Shanas, Advisor. The members are Scientists Thushan Nisansala and Ruvini Wickramarachchi.

Sabinuddhi Executive Director Journalist Sirinama Rajapaksa said that the Board of Intelligence has already nominated all the categories for the awards.

“Sports literature is an essential factor in the promotion of sports. The interplay between the player, the playground and the sports fan builds from the sports literature. But in comparison to other countries, especially in comparison to neighbouring India, the sports literature of our country still exists today.

“Only a very limited number of people are involved in sports literature. They engage in sports literature in the midst of various difficulties and challenges. The objective of the Sabuddhi Sports Literary Awards is not only to recognise such writers, journalists, institutions and organisations, but also to encourage them further in the field of sports literature,” he said.
