Premier contractor International Construction Consortium (ICC) said it is optimistic in the construction sector being one of the key avenues to restart Sri Lanka, and stressed that getting the industry in full force at the earliest, by adhering strictly to the health guidelines, is essential for economic revival post COVID-19.

“The local construction sector is a key contributor to the national economy, making up on average 9% of the national GDP, bringing in the much-required Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) and providing jobs to more than 500,000 persons directly and indirectly. Opening the industry to resume operations is ideal to restart Sri Lanka,” an ICC spokesperson said.

He added: “As a responsible contractor, it is paramount to complete our clients’ projects with minimal delays. To our investors, it is vital that we resume work and prove that they invested with the right developer, one that is financially stable and delivers on its promise. And finally, to our employees and contractors, we have a responsibility to provide them with the jobs and income needed to safeguard them from the pitfalls of unemployment, and keep our projects devoid of COVID-19.”

ICC added that measures are taken to ensure the construction of its projects are carried out while strictly meeting the guidelines imposed by the health authorities. Although it would mean realigning the work infrastructure and processes, the ability to assess, adapt, and move forward in difficult times is what has made ICC a leader in the industry.

A few notable projects that have resumed work are; Oceanfront Condominiums Galle, Mount Clifford Range Homagama, Central Expressway Project Phase 2, Eastern University of Sri Lanka, Faculty of Technology University of Colombo, Rehabilitation of Badulla-Passara Road and Havelock City Phase4.  With 2020 being the 40th year of its existence, ICC has faced and overcome many challenges throughout history. With COVID-19, the Chairman, Board of Directors and employees of ICC have taken action swiftly to prove why they are the leader in the Sri Lankan construction industry.
