Whatever allegation is made President says he is committed to eliminate fraud and corruption

• Says Bond Commission appointed to fulfill pledge of good governance 

President Maithripala Sirisena said that even though a few people within the Government levelled allegations and criticisms against him for appointing the Bond Commission, he appointed the Commission to fulfill the pledge given by him to the people to eradicate fraud and corruption from the country, while ensuring a just society as a government which practised good governance.

He made these remarks while addressing a ceremony to mark the second death anniversary of the late Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha thero, held within the premises of Ape Gama in Battaramulla yesterday.

President Sirisena emphasised that all who were accountable for the Central Bank bond issue should bear responsibility in this regard. He added that the good governance government was formed with a clear and pure intention and not to repeat the wrongs of the previous administration.

All should commit themselves as a consensual government to protect the concept of good governance as well as to deliver social justice, the President asserted. 

He added that the rule of law should be equal for every citizen and the law should be enforced in a proper manner against all wrongdoers. 

The President also said that he became the President of the country with a readiness to give up that position at any time and said that it was the responsibility of all those who were with the Government to provide their assistance to the initiative he has undertaken for the betterment of the country.   

The President stated that the good things done by the government of good governance, which completes three years on 8 January next year, should be taken to the people. He said the Government still has the time to correct some wrongs committed by a few people within the Government and move forward.

“The highest tribute which can be paid to the late Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero is to be committed to building a fair society which was his vision, philosophy and expectation,” the President said.

President Sirisena laid the foundation stone for the statue of the late Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero, which is to be built at the Parliament roundabout.

The Maha Sangha, including the Chief Prelate of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samashree Dhamma Maha Sangha Council, the Most Venerable Iththepane Dhammalankara Thero, the Chief Incumbent of Vidyalankara Pirivena in Peliyagoda, the Most Venerable Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thero, Chancellor of the Sri Jayewardene University Prof. Ven. Bellanwila Vimalarathana Thero, Ven. Thiniyawala Palitha Thero, Ministers and MPs including Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, public servants, representatives of civil society, dignitaries, the Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero Commemoration Committee members and Attorney-at-Law Ravi Jayawardena were among those present at yesterday’s commemoration ceremony.
