Vesak at the Berlin Vihara 2018

The Berlin Buddhist Vihara founded by Asoka Weeraratna (1957), and housed in Das Buddhistische Haus built by Dr. Paul Dahlke in 1924, being the oldest Theravada Buddhist temple in Europe, observed Vesak on two consecutive Sundays 29 April and 6 May. The ceremonies were conducted with due priority being given to the observance of Buddhist precepts and right conduct. 

On 29 April, several dayakayas (12) including Sinhalese and German Buddhists observed ‘sil’. Two Buddhist monks currently in long term residence at the Berlin Vihara, namely Ven. Dhamma Muninda Thera (an Italian monk trained at the Mitirigala Nissarana Vanaya) and Ven. Mahagama Suwineeta Thero led the religious activities of the program including delivery of Dhamma Talks, Conduct of Meditation, and chanting of Seth Pirith to invoke the blessings of the Noble Triple Gem on all those present and all living beings. Over 60 devotees and well wishers took part in the day’s program at the temple.

On 6 May, a Public Meeting was held in the large scenic compound of the Berlin Vihara. Members of the Sri Lankan Societies in Germany gave generous assistance in organising the Dansala which served a variety of food to those present. There was a large gathering of Buddhists and well-wishers from Sri Lanka, Germany, Thailand, and several other nationalities on this occasion. Tissa Weeraratna delivered the welcome address.
