Successful poll shows strength of an independent public service: Karu

• Thanks EC Chairman, members and all other officials
• Says voters who braved health risks must be appreciated

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday congratulated the Chairman and members of the Elections Commission as well as health, security and all other public officials for the model election they conducted amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak.

“The successful conclusion of the election shows the strength of our public service, when independent,” Jayasuriya said in a statement.

He also expressed his appreciation to the 71% of voters who defied the health risks posed by COVID-19 and came to cast their vote. “I believe that as a country with long democratic traditions, the people will respect the outcome of the election and be magnanimous in victory.”

The former Speaker added that many countries would study the successful conduct of this election and take it as an example.
