Issuing a statement for May Day, Premadasa said that it was the Government’s responsibility  to ensure a conducive economic climate for the working public to survive in times of crisis.

“The working public is facing uncertain times due to the COVID-19 virus, for thousands, their employment is no longer certain, their daily struggle has become worse,” he stated, pointing out that this year’s May Day theme should be ‘Protect Jobs, Protect the right to life’.

Premadasa said that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a deep sense of uncertainty for those who make up the work force, and it is essential the Government and the country stand shoulder to shoulder with them in the long-term as the economic consequences of the virus will weaken the national economy.

The former Opposition leader thanked all those who worked tirelessly to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading and called on the Government to ensure the needs and rights of the working public are met.
