The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council at the upcoming Local Government Election will be announced before the end of the week, Joint Opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardena told the Daily FT.

“We are only fielding professionals for the coming election and so a worthy individual will be named for the mayoral candidacy of the Colombo Municipal Council.”

However, the MP was critical of the candidates being fielded for the same portfolio by the two parties in the Government.

“Anyone nominated from the Government seems to be incapable and incompetent of running the Colombo Municipal Council, whose collapse they have been party to. We will announce our mayoral candidate before the end of this week.”

Furthermore, MP Gunawardena said the SLPP election campaign was going strong. “Our campaign is going very well. We are seeing higher participation than expected. We had two mammoth rallies, with the Kadawatha rally attracting a massive crowd of supporters. We are at the forefront of the election campaigns.”

The United National Party last month declared that Rosy Senanayake would be contesting for the Colombo Municipal Council under their banner while the United People’s Freedom Alliance nominated Azath Salley to the same role. Medical specialist Ranil Jayasena is contesting as the mayoral candidate for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna. (SG)
