Youth and young professional across Sri Lanka will today launch a movement to rally support to hold elected official accountable to democratic values or suffer the consequences of being voted out of office.

A spokesman said Sri Lankan democracy had reached its darkest hour.

“Are you angered and frustrated by the behaviour of many of our elected officials in parliament and the inaction of their party leaders? We like to remind you that this is not the first time that we have been let down by our political leadership. It’s time to channel our emotions and principles towards constructive action,” the spokesman said.

Titled ‘Rise up’, the peaceful demonstration and solidarity gathering will take place from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. at Independence Square today.

The event is aimed at “protesting non-violently about the continued deterioration of our political culture; issue a press statement outlining our stance on the current state of political affairs; with the vision to launch a national movement comprised of youth and professional groups and concerned individuals from diverse backgrounds from across Sri Lanka, to create a larger united and amplified voice to restore and preserve our democracy and make clear to those who continue to threaten and mock our democratic rights that our resolve is stronger and our numbers are greater and that we will not allow our nation to be destroyed. We will not watch silently or helplessly any longer.”
