  • Criticises both UNP and UPFA for failing to meet people’s expectations
  • Says JVP’s efforts aimed at restoring and protecting democracy
  • Believes time for fresh change to develop country
  • Emphasises JVP has no faith in any MP from either of the main parties

Sri Lanka’s two main political parties holding the Prime Minister post by turn has only resulted in the continuation of corruption and fraud, charged JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Parliament yesterday, insisting it is time for a change that would develop the country and find solutions to public issues.

According to MP Dissanayake, the constitutional crisis was a result of the coalition Government’s behaviour, and decisions made by UNP MP Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was the Prime Minister before being sacked by President Maithripala Sirisena on 26 October.

Outlining the reasons why the JVP came forward to fight against the actions of President Sirisena, MP Dissanayake held the JVP is not concerned about who would be the Prime Minister, but troubled about the unconstitutional method used to get rid of the incumbent and to appoint another.“The Prime Minister post will be held by a person from either of the main camps - the UNP or the UPFA. Whoever that person would be, we are sure that person cannot do much for the betterment of this country. That person will not be able to come up with a new plan to initiate a good political culture, or a good economic policy for this country. We do not have faith in any person from either side. When it comes to Ranil Wickremesinghe, we hold the same position that we held in last April, when a No-Confidence Motion was brought against him,” held MP Dissanayake, who pledged to continue the fight against the attempts to undermine Parliament, but not to side with the UNP or the UPFA to elect a new Prime Minister.MP Dissanayake also held that the Vote of Confidence moved yesterday in Parliament is irrelevant to the JVP. “When a new Government was formed in 2015, there was a uniqueness with power being distributed. Several fractions held the power. But unfortunately, one fraction, a group of persons and a single authority, started to claim the power. A governing party is responsible for doing the right thing. They are also responsible to make sure not to do the wrong thing as well. Wickremesinghe is responsible for doing such things that a Government is not supposed to be doing,” charged MP Dissanayake, who held President Sirisena as the mastermind of the Constitutional impasse.
