Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday congratulated his British counterpart Boris Johnson and expressed expectations to further strengthen the close relationship between the two countries.

Given below is the full message released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

It is with great pleasure that I extend my warm congratulations to you on your assumption of office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United Kingdom and Sri Lanka enjoy historical ties and cooperation in many spheres including the Commonwealth agenda. The United Kingdom remains an important economic partner as Sri Lanka’s second largest export market and third biggest source of origin for inbound tourism. I am confident that these ties would be further strengthened and deepened under your astute leadership.

My Government and the people of Sri Lanka remain committed to enhancing existing affinities and robust cooperation for our mutual benefit and prosperity. I look forward to meeting you at the earliest opportunity.
