The Prime Minister’s Office in a statement yesterday condemned malicious statements made against Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) Chairperson Dr. Deepika Udagama, and has instructed the Inspector General of Police to conduct an investigation into the matter.

The HRCSL has been appointed in terms of the provisions of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, and is an entity that discharges its functions independently.

Directing public threats against the Chairperson of the HRCSL, as well as highlighting such irresponsible statements via media, are serious issues.

The Inspector General of Police has been further instructed to ensure the security of the Chairperson, as well as the other commissioners and the staff of the HRCSL.
