There are no plans to impose travel restrictions in the country during the forthcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year, National Operations Centre for the Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) Head and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva said yesterday.

He added that random antigen tests will be performed if there is a risk identified with persons travelling out of Colombo.

“The Director General of Health Services has issued guidelines for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, especially on how Avurudu celebrations should be carried out. During New Year celebrations last year, we were able to eliminate COVID-19 entirely from the end of the month to October,” he said.

The NOCPCO Head went on to say that they expected the Sinhala and Tamil New Year guidelines to help eliminate COVID-19 in the country this year as well and that it has been possible to maintain the daily COVID-19 count below 200.
