Motion to appoint SC on electoral reforms moved in P’ment

• Committee to consist of 15 members to be named by Speaker
• To identify changes to election laws and electoral system

Leader of the House Dinesh Gunawardena yesterday moved a motion in Parliament to appoint a Select Committee (SC) to identify appropriate changes to election laws and the electoral system, and to recommend necessary amendments.

As per the motion, the chairman and members of the committee will be appointed by the Speaker and it will consist of 15 members.

It will have the power to summon any person to appear before it as well as call for documents or records, obtain written or oral evidence and obtain the services of specialists and experts in the relevant fields to assist the committee.

The committee will report back to Parliament in six months.
