INTERPOL Red Notice leads to arrest of Sri Lanka bombings suspect

The International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) says its Red Notice has helped the arrest of Sri Lanka bombing suspect Mohammed Milhan and four others in Jeddah recently.

Ahamed Milhan Hayathu Mohamed, a 29-year-old National Thowheed Jama’ath member, wanted on charges including terrorism and murder, was arrested in the Middle East along with four other suspects and extradited to Sri Lanka Thursday, 14 June.

The police organisation said the Red Notice was issued as part of the support to the investigation provided by INTERPOL, including its deployment of an Incident Response Team (IRT) immediately following the bombings on Easter Sunday on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka.

“The arrest and extradition of one of the key suspects in the Sri Lanka bomb attacks is an important step in the ongoing investigation, and one which INTERPOL is proud to have supported,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock.

The IRT, which was the first international team to arrive in Colombo after the attacks, was in place from 23 April until 22 May, INTERPOL said.

The team included expertise in areas including counter-terrorism, explosives, analysis and Disaster Victim Identification, in addition to providing real-time crosschecks against INTERPOL’s global databases.
